artists are just people who feel the need to explain everything that they do

It were. Though I have been known to make a typo or two  without even trying! And the point was not pointed at anyone in particular, just so’s you know. I basically just wanted to say “Cool out”.

I’m the Fonzie of Tumblr. (To the tune of  Warren Zevon’s “Werewolf of London”)

(p.s. I just watched Warren Zevon’s last Letterman appearance, and, conincidentally, he offers up his own contribution to  our discussion.) Watch all four parts if oyu have the time.)

lukesimcoe:

point taken. although i do take my tumblr call-outs seriously… oh, and i sincerely hope the “youse” was an intentional typo.

elainecorden:

[long, earnest discussion on the purpose/meaning of art, to which I contributed, redacted]

whoa whoa whoa. whoa. whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa. whoa.

Everybody cool out. Put on AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck”. Repeat until youse want to crush beer cans on your forehead and/or make out for my entertainment.

On the one hand, I’m back. On the other arm, this blog is now just about how much I hate Air Canada. That’s never been done before right?

So many followers!

Gene

It can’t be easy maintaining a piece of conceptual art that masquerades as a coffeeshop every day. Seriously, every visit is like those games in OWL Magazine where you spot the differences between two almost identical pictures. It’s not just the wacky signs - it’s everything.  Even if you go in three times in a day. Gene rewards curiousity and punishes impatience. It’s like a biting commentary on consumerism. Also, best coffee in the city.

towerofsleep:

I didn’t know this guy’s name was Gideon. I should have asked his name ages ago, since I buy coffee from him on practically a daily basis. I love this dude, and I love his shop. He looks more haggard all the time, though. I’m a little worried about him.

elainecorden:

Oh, and this is Gideon, owner of the charming, idiosyncratic shambles that is Gene on Kingsway and Main St. in Vancouver, and also the namesake of my dog, kinda*.  You can see how the dog is kinda Gideonesque.

Photo courtesy  my lovely friends Dane and Veronika Baspaly, who were kind enough to send this ‘cause I think they knew I missed coffee from Gene, with them.

( *I also just like old-timey people names on dogs)

Also, it's Saturday Night...

…and I am dog blogging and reading Alice Munro short stories.  Big Ups for Small Towns. Gonna let my inner homebody shine.

I think its safe to say that you can’t sound like too much of a Communications major on Tumblr. Incomplete degree represent!

lukesimcoe:

What I mean is that art (for me) has to have meaning and purpose. Throwing paint at a canvas isn’t art unless there’s a thesis behind why you’re doing it. Maybe I sound like too much of a communications major, but I’ve never really understood or appreciated art that wasn’t… political or social, I guess.

elainecorden:

I feel just the opposite - if the artist needs to explain what they’ve already expressed in a symbolic language, then their art is not serving its most basic function.

That’s my take on it. I think we all know the answer to the question “what is art?” is riotous laughter.

lukesimcoe:

Hmm… I agree with the sentiment, but I’ve always felt that if you can’t explain your art, then it’s not art.
